Sitting stretches them across the hip before the knee ever starts moving, so every rep loads the muscle in a lengthened position from start to finish.

You can push the mechanism further by hinging your torso slightly forward over the lap pad for the whole set. More hip flexion means more stretch — expect to use a bit less weight and feel considerably more hamstring.

Leaving the lap pad loose. If the thigh pad isn't locked down, your hips rise off the seat as you curl. The hip angle opens, the stretch disappears, and you've recreated a lying leg curl with worse mechanics. Cinch the pad until your thighs can't lift, and keep your hips glued to the seat.
Scooting forward in the seat. Sliding forward pulls your knee joint away from the machine's pivot, which turns part of each rep into the pad dragging along your leg instead of resistance through the hamstring. Set the back pad so your knee lines up with the pivot, and sit all the way back against it.
Cutting the bottom of the range. Stopping short of full knee extension between reps skips the stretched position — exactly where the seated curl's extra stimulus lives. Let your legs return until the knees are almost straight before starting the next rep.
Pointing your toes. With the feet plantarflexed, the gastrocnemius shortens along with the hamstrings and starts sharing the load — you'll feel it as calf cramping. Keep your toes pulled toward your shins for the entire set.
Yanking the weight down. Fast, jerky reps shift work away from the controlled eccentric where most of the growth happens. Take about three seconds to return each rep; if you can't, the weight is too heavy.
Treat the seated leg curl as your primary hamstring isolation, not a finisher: 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps with 60–90 seconds rest and a deliberate 3-second lowering phase. The slow eccentric compounds the stretched-position advantage. For heavier, strength-flavored work, 6–8 reps with 90–120 seconds rest.
Place it after your hip-hinge work — Romanian deadlifts or good mornings — on a leg or pull day. The two patterns pair rather than compete: the hinge loads hip extension, the curl loads knee flexion, and the hamstrings need both trained directly. Around 8–14 total hamstring sets per week, split between the two patterns, suits most lifters.
Progress by adding the torso-forward lean before adding weight, then load once the lean feels stable. Once or twice per week is enough — hamstrings recover fast from curls, slower from heavy hinging.

Suspect a left–right strength gap, or rebuilding after a hamstring strain? A standing one-leg curl trains each side independently and biases the upper hamstring — use it as a corrective block, then return to the seated machine for bulk work.
